An in-law suite is an ADU designed for multigenerational living — private, comfortable and often built for accessibility. Here’s how it differs from a standard ADU, how we design for aging-in-place, and what it takes to permit.

01

In-law suite vs ADU

An in-law suite is an ADU used for family — it can be an attached suite or a standalone unit. The difference is usually in the design: comfort, accessibility and proximity for aging parents or adult children.

02

Design for multigenerational living

We design single-level layouts with wide doorways, walk-in showers and step-free entries where needed — independence and privacy for your family, on one property.

03

Permits, cost & timeline

Built as a legal ADU, an in-law suite follows the same OC permit process. We handle the submittal; cost and timeline scale with size, finishes and accessibility features.

Frequently asked questions

In-law suite vs ADU vs granny flat?
They’re the same kind of unit — a legal ADU. “In-law suite” and “granny flat” just describe how it’s used; an in-law suite is typically designed for family and accessibility.
Can it be wheelchair-accessible?
Yes — we design for aging-in-place with single-level layouts, wide doors, walk-in showers and step-free access.
Attached to the house or separate?
Either. An in-law suite can be an attached suite sharing a wall, or a detached unit in the yard — we recommend based on your lot and how much privacy you want.
What’s the cost range?
It depends on size, finishes and accessibility features; we give you a firm quote after seeing your property.
Can we rent it later?
Yes — because it’s built as a legal ADU, you can rent it out down the road if your needs change.
